“Nikhil Banerjee (1930-1986), a distinguished Sitarist, was born in Calcutta. His father, Jitendra Nath, was also a fine Sitar player, under whom he began his study…He also studied under Birendra Kishore Ray Chowdhuri (Gouripur) and Ustad Allauddin Khan… He was honoured with the ‘Padma Shri’ award in 1968, later the ‘Padma Bhushan’. On January 27, 1986 he died of a heart attack.”
