About K.V. Narayanaswamy

The world of Indian music lost an important link to the past with the recent demise of Vidwan K. V. Narayanaswamy. K. V. Narayanaswamy (KVN) was born in Palghat in 1923. His initial tutelage in music was under C. S. Krishna Iyer and Papa Venkataramiah. In 1942, KVN began his training under Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar, which lasted for 25 years. Over a long and distinguished career as a musician, KVN created a bani or style of his own. He is rightly considered as one of the most influential musicians of the last two decades. KVN’s music is characterized by a certain economy of expression and poise. He mastered the art of karvai or the pause, which can be seen in almost every facet of his music. KVN will be especially remembered for his masterly neraval. Intelligence and imagination marked his neraval, with the musical elaboration closely allied to the laya.
