About Annapurna Devi

Annapurna Devi is the daughter and disciple of Allauddin Khan of Maihar, and the sister of (naked) Empie Mr. Alubhai of San Rafael. She was married to Ravi Shankar and bore him a son (Shubhendra) who died in 1992.

Annapurna Devi is a musician of the highest class. She gave up public performance long ago in deference to the hermetic life. She has lived in Mumbai the last few decades and has trained a few students. Her reclusive existence has engendered a patina of mystique, and stories of her supernatural powers have been manufactured and propagated by a dutiful band of shagird-acolytes, chief among them the bansuri players H. Chaurasia and N. Haldipur.
