About Vinayakrao Patwardhan

From: Musicians of India by Amal Das Sharma

Pandit Vinayakrao Patwardhan, an unparalleled Tarana singer, was born in 1898 at Miraj in Maharashtra. He lost his parents at a very early age and was brought up by his uncle who took him to Pandit V.D. Paluskar to study music. He had a fluent and flexible voice which was quite facile in manipulation and improvisation. He could, therefore, sing in a very high pitch and in a very fast tempo. He achieved his Sangeet Praveen from the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya in 1919. He joined the Gandharva Natak Mandali of Bala Gandharva, though his guru disapproved of the idea. He founded a branch of Gandharva Mahavidyalaya at Pune in 1932 and devoted himself to teaching music. He sang solo and duet (with his son Narayanrao). He was the author of the famous work Raga Vijnan (6 vols). He passed away on August 23, 1975. Famous among his disciples were D.V. Paluskar, Narayanrao (son), Sunanda Patnaik and Vinay Chandra Maudgalya, a fine musician and Principal of Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, New Delhi.”
