“Azmat Hussain Khan, a great vocalist, was born in Atrauli in 1911. He studied mainly under his maternal uncle Altaf Hussain Khan of Khurja, with whom he travelled to several states of eastern India. He was a distinguished singer of Dhrupada, Dhamar, Khayal, Sadra etc., and was a court-musician of Baroda. Later, he went to Bombay and settled there. He trained Durgabai Shirodkar, Nalini Barodkar, Manik Verma, T.L. Raju and Yunus Hussain Khan. He had a liking for poetry and composed many poems in Hindi and Urdu under his pen-names ‘Dilrang’ and ‘Maiqash’ respectively.”
Vilayat Hussain Khan adds in his Sangeetagyon ke Samsmaran:
“…[Azmat Hussain Khan] took taleem from me. He also imbibed the finer points of vocal music by listening carefully to Ustad Faiyyaz Hussain Khan whom he considered as his guru. He maintained a keen interest in poetry and became a pupil of the famous poet Simab Akbarbadi…”
