“‘Vadya Shiromani’ Kanthe Maharaj (1880-1969) was one of the celebrated Tabla players of India, and was popular throughout the country. He studied mainly under Baldev Sahaya. He was a court-musician of Nepal along with his guru. He performed in many places and lived in Calcutta for a long time. Noted among his disciples were Ashutosh Bhattacharji, Badri Maharaj, Kishan Maharaj (nephew), Krishna Kumar Ganguli (Natubabu), Nanhe Sahaya, Nanku Maharaj (son-in-law), Ramnath Misra, Shamta Prasad (Gudai Maharaj) and Sital Misra. He passed away on August 1, 1969 in Banaras.
