“Vilayat Khan (1928-2004) was born at Gouripur in Mymensingh, but was brought up in Calcutta. He studied under his father Inayat Khan for a brief period. After his father’s death in 1938 he studied under his mother Bashiran Bibi. He also learnt to play Surbahar from his uncle Waheed Khan. He studied also from his maternal grandfather Bande Husain Khan from 1938 to 1942 and for a brief period under Ustad Faiyaz Husain Khan (Agra).”
