Sangameshwar Gurav was born on December 7, 1931, and was trained in Hindustani vocal music by his father Ganpatrao. As a boy he was inspired by the music of Abdul Karim Khan. In 1976 he was offered a position by Mallikarjun Mansur in the Faculty of Music at Karnatak University in Dharwad. He served there until 1993. His 2 sons continue the family tradition in music. The elder Nandikeshwar plays the tabla, and the younger Kaivalya Kumar is a vocalist.
