Up Kesarbai Kerkar Photo Gallery Slideshow

Kesarbai Kerkar was born in the tiny village of Keri (also spelled "Querim") in the Ponda taluka of Goa, about 15 miles due east of the capital city of Panaji. The somnolent hamlet of Keri, nestled snugly in an area of serene beauty, is home to three temples devoted to Vetal, Goddess Sateri, and Goddess VijayaDurga.

There are two houses in Keri associated with Kesarbai. One is her ancestral family home where she was born, whose occupants today are the descendants of her brother, the sarangiya Anant Kerkar. Following a feud with Anant, Kesarbai built another house less than a kilometre away. This second home has now been parlayed into the Surashree Kesarbai Kerkar High School. Both the houses essentially stand in their original condition; extension work on the school continues without disturbing the parent structure.
